Wedding Tipping Etiquette: Who, When, and How Much to Tip in 2025
When I help plan weddings at Brandt 1910 and even when I’m simply working the evening of a special event, I almost always get asked, “How much are we supposed to tip”? Tipping your wedding vendors can be an added expense to your wedding day budget but it shows immense appreciation for the team of people who worked so hard to make your wedding day extra special, just for you. This goes for your DJ, caterer, photographer, limo driver, hair and makeup artists, your wedding officiant, security staff, and your wedding cake baker.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about tipping your wedding vendors. From your DJ to your photographer, we'll explore the proper etiquette for showing your appreciation to the hardworking professionals who make your special day unforgettable.
Why Tipping Matters
Tipping is a gesture of gratitude, acknowledging the effort vendors put into your wedding. While many vendors include service fees in their contracts, a tip is typically an optional but thoughtful way to say “thank you” for exceptional service. This small act of kindness not only shows your appreciation for their hard work but also helps support the livelihoods of these dedicated professionals who have made your special day possible.
The History of Tipping and Fulshear Regional Etiquette

As the owner of a Historical Southern Venue, Brandt 1910, just outside of Fulshear, Texas, I often like to start these blogs off with a little history. The tradition of tipping dates back centuries, originating in Europe as early as the 17th century. The practice made its way to the United States in the late 19th century, and by the early 20th century, tipping had become an ingrained part of American service culture.
However, Greater Houston and Fulshear-regional norms and expectations around tipping can vary. Southern hospitality, famed for its warmth and generosity, often influences tipping etiquette. It's not uncommon for individuals in the South to tip a little extra, valuing personal service and relationships highly. Texans, in particular, often emphasize the importance of showing appreciation for hard work, whether in a bustling restaurant or during life’s grand celebrations—like weddings. This regional charm adds a distinct touch to tipping practices, fostering a sense of gratitude and community that often goes beyond mere obligation.
How Much to Tip
The amount you choose to tip varies based on several factors such as the quality of service, the vendor’s level of experience, and your budget. As a general rule, it is recommended to tip between 15-20% for services rendered. However, if you feel that a particular vendor went above and beyond in making your wedding day perfect, consider increasing the percentage or giving an additional flat amount.
Who to Tip

While tipping is common practice for some vendors, it may not apply to all.
💡 Pro Tip: Always check your contracts to see if gratuity is included. Some vendors incorporate it into their pricing, while others don’t. If you’re still unsure who to tip for your particular wedding, check with your venue manager; they should be able to give you all the details and customary amounts, especially if you are working with their recommended vendors or if if they make you use their vendors (something Brandt 1910 will never do).
Now, let’s take a closer look at who to tip, how much, and when.

1. Tipping Your Wedding Hair and Makeup Artists
How Much to Tip
Tip 15-25% of the total service cost, typically around $50 to $100 per artist, depending on their services, how long they are with you, and how many people they are making up.
When to Tip
Tip after they’ve completed your bridal party’s hair and makeup. It means a lot to them when you hand it to them personally.
Why They Deserve It
These pros do more than make you look beautiful; they ensure you feel confident walking down the aisle.

2. Tipping Your Wedding Photographer
How Much to Tip
Consider tipping $50 to $200 per photographer, with the amount depending on how long they’re with you and the quality of their service. If they have assistants, they should receive $50 to $75 each.
When to Tip
Tip at the end of the event or after you’ve received your photo gallery and are thrilled with the results. Ask for their Zelle or Venmo number, they will be beyond thrilled!
Why They Deserve It
Capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments takes talent, skill, and effort. One of my favorite photographers, Heather, from Always Photogenic, is an expert at preserving memories that couples cherish forever. This is one of the things from your wedding night that you get to keep forever and you want to honor that by making sure the photographer is appreciated.
3. Tipping Your Officiant
How Much to Tip
For religious officiants, if you're making a donation, a typical amount ranges from $50 to $150, depending on the customs of the institution and your personal budget.
When to Tip
When it comes to tipping your officiant, timing and amount are key to showing your appreciation thoughtfully. This donation is usually provided to the church or religious organization either prior to or shortly after the ceremony. For non-religious or professional officiants, a tip can be handed directly to them in a thank-you card at the end of the ceremony or during the reception.
Why They Deserve It
Your officiant plays a pivotal role in creating one of the most cherished moments of your special day. Whether they’ve worked with you to craft heartfelt vows or delivered a meaningful, personal speech, their contributions bring emotional depth to your ceremony.
4. Tipping your Wedding DJ & Emcee
How Much to Tip
Tip your DJ or Emcee $50 to $150, depending on the level of service provided. At Brandt 1910, our All-Inclusive Wedding Package utilizes the services of The Deluxe DJs, and they also act as your emcee, so I recommend tipping on the higher end of that range.
When to Tip
Hand the envelope to your DJ at the end of their set or when they’re packing up for the evening. You can also ask your wedding coordinator to take charge of this arrangement so there is one less thing you have to remember and you’ll most likely be long gone before they are finished packing up.
Why They Deserve It
A DJ does more than spin tracks; they curate the mood for every moment—from your walk down the aisle to the unforgettable reception dance-off. We’re proud to collaborate with Deluxe DJs, who always bring the energy and ensure every celebration at Brandt 1910 is a party to remember.

5. Tipping Your Wedding Caterer
How Much to Tip
Catering staff typically receive 15-20% of the food and beverage bill. Alternatively, you can tip $50 to $100 per captain or chef and $20 to $50 per server.
When to Tip
Before you tip, make sure to check your final bill and for All-Inclusive Packages, like Brandt 1910’s, check with your venue coordinator. Tips can be included with the final payment or handed directly to the catering manager at the end of the night.
Why They Deserve It
From serving perfectly plated entrees to managing tricky dietary restrictions, Brandt 1910’s 2025 All-Inclusive caterer, Pier 36 Seafood is known for delivering flawless culinary experiences. Their chicken, beef, and seafood dishes are a hit with Brandt 1910 couples and guests alike. They will even cut your cake for you at no extra charge.

6. Tipping Your Wedding Bar Staff & Wait Staff
How Much to Tip
Tip $20 to $50 per bartender and $20 to $30 per server. If you want to simplify, consider adding 15-20% of the total bar tab as gratuity if your have an open bar tab.
When to Tip
Tip at the end of the night when the bar closes or after service concludes. Ask your wedding coordinator or the maid of honor to handle this. At Brandt 1910, you can also ask your wedding site coordinator who will be on-site with you throughout the evening amd will be happy to handle this task.
Why They Deserve It
Brandt 1910’s skilled in-house bar staff and servers go above and beyond to ensure your guests have an exceptional experience. We pride ourselves on creating seamless celebrations from start to finish.
7. Tipping Your Wedding Planner and Coordinator
How Much to Tip
If you’re thrilled with their work, consider tipping $50 to $500, or up to 10% of their total fee.
When to Tip
Hand it to them at the end of the event or send it along with a heartfelt thank-you note after your honeymoon.
Why They Deserve It
Your wedding planner handles countless details to make sure your day flows perfectly. A tip is a wonderful gesture to acknowledge their behind-the-scenes efforts.
8. Should You Tip Your Wedding Security Officers?
In general, your wedding security officers do not expect a tip, but just like everyone else on this list, it is always appreciated!
How Much to Tip
Tip security staff $20 to $50 each as a thank-you for ensuring everyone’s safety. They also really appreciate being asked if they would like a plate for dinner. Don’t worry about having a seat for them, they will find a spot 🙂
When to Tip
Tip at the end of the event as they complete their duties.
Why They Deserve It
From protecting your gifts to maintaining peace, security personnel play a critical role in keeping your celebration stress-free. Brandt 1910 is located in Wallis, Texas, just outside of Fulshear, and we utilize the services of the Wallis Police Department for security. This means they are going above and beyond their normal call of duty to ensure you have a wonderful and safe wedding day.

9. Tipping Your Limo/Car Service
How Much to Tip
Tip 15-20% of the total cost of the transportation service. This is often included in the contract, so double-check before tipping again.
When to Tip
Hand the tip to your driver at the end of the night or after they’ve transported everyone safely. New husbands, this one is on you!
Why They Deserve It
Limo and car services like Executive Limo Service ensures couples and their wedding parties arrive in style, setting the tone for a memorable day.
