When couples first start planning a wedding, one of the earliest questions they usually hear is, “How many people are you inviting?”

How many wedding guests can I afford?
Your guest count affects far more than the number of chairs you put in a room. It impacts almost every major part of your wedding budget—from catering and bar service to flowers, linens, rentals and even the venue you ultimately choose.

Start With Your Total Wedding Budget—Not Your Dream Guest List
One of the biggest mistakes I see couples make is building their entire guest list before deciding what they realistically want to spend, without understanding that these two things are connected.

A backyard-style barbecue for 150 people will have a very different budget than a formal seated dinner for 150 people with upgraded china, premium bar service, elaborate floral arrangements and a live band.

If your meal costs $45 per person, which is the minimum I have seen from BBQ caterers like Top Notch BBQ:
100 guests = $4,500
150 guests = $6,750
200 guests = $9,000
And that may be before service staff, gratuity, rentals or other catering costs.
Suddenly, inviting 50 additional people could mean several thousand dollars.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't invite them.
It simply means you should know what that decision costs.
When couples ask me about the average wedding cost in Houston, I always think it is more useful to look at what your wedding will include rather than trying to match a citywide average.
Your guest count, priorities and vendor choices matter far more than someone else's average.
Rentals Add Up Faster Than You Think
